INFORMATION and Communication Technology is the tool and gateway to learning and it helps the outcomes-based education (OBE) system, Coronation College principal Vincent Mbuge said at an ICT symposium held at the school in Lae, Morobe, last week.
“Last year the teachers, students and the board decided that ICT is the way to go,” Mbuge said.
The symposium was the first of its kind for Coronation College to promote and showcase the importance of ICT in education.
Mbuge said it would be an annual event for the school, which would invite other schools in the city to attend.
Organising coordinator Mavelyn Panapen said the purpose of the symposium was to raise funds to buy IT text books because the school had no text books.
She said subjects such as mathematics and English had text books and students were able to learn from them.
 and sit for examinations.
“Using the OBE system, it is very difficult for students to learn without having any proper materials, which results in poor performance during national examinations, especially the grades 10s and 12s,” Panapen said.
“I think the education department should do away with setting examinations for IT subjects using the OBE until all required materials are prepared by the department for students to use.”
He said teachers must be well trained with IT skills in order to help students.
ICT organisations that took part in the symposium were Bank South Pacific, Telikom PNG and Citifon, Seeto Kui Ltd, TAFE IEA College (Lae campus) and Digicel PNG.
