ID needed to drive a bus

BUS and taxi drivers in Port Moresby will now have identification cards displayed on the dashboards for the convenience of passengers, according to Road Transport Authority.
Chief executive Nelson Terama said under the Road and Traffic Act 2014, implemented on June 1, PMV drivers would display IDs for passengers to see. This will be done to identify and regulate vehicles, drivers, or vehicle owners and to properly deal with situations such as road accidents.
Terama revealed this during the public transport workshop in Port Moresby on Friday.
Discussions were held on how to create policies and implement the idea.
Comparisons were done to see how Port Moresby, and the country can implement systems that will regulate and improve the transport industry.
“There are many occasions where public vehicles cause or face accidents and drivers escape,” said Terama.
“The driver would later go and drive another vehicle and there is no proper control and management of the system.”
He said drivers and crews will have IDs with their contact details and serial number on the vehicle so that they are efficiently monitored.
The workshop was hosted by the Consultative Implementation and Monitoring Council.
