Illegal miner falls to his death
The National, Monday July 21st, 2014
A MAN was found dead in a pit at the Porgera mine, in Enga, last Monday.
Police were informed of the incident by the Porgera Joint Venture’s asset protection department after the body was removed to the mine medical centre that night.
The deceased was identified as Wasato Kaipas, 26, from Titip village, in Kandep district, Enga.
It is alleged the deceased, an illegal miner, fell about 100 metres from a stock pile while trying to escape.
Police and PJV investigators visited the scene the next day and discovered bloodstains on rocks.
He sustained injuries to his head.
The body is now at the Paiam Hospital morgue awaiting a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
Provincial police commander Chief Supt Norman Kambo is appealing to the relatives of the deceased to let police investigate circumstances surrounding his death.
He warned people who continued to enter the mine pit illegally that they would be arrested and charged.
