Despite being illiterate, a Morobe woman managed to complete a training for villagers designed to build their confidence and capacity.

Wasio Martin, from Zindaga cannot read or write.

But that did not deter her from completing the personal viability training in the Wafi-Golpu exploration project that other villagers attended.

“During the training, I was able to learn many new things that can help me and my family,” Martin said.

“The training has given me enough knowledge and skills to help my husband begin a trade store business and poultry farming.”

The week-long workshop aimed to develop self-confidence and build capacity among people in the villages.

Martin was one of the 25 participants.

The Entrepreneurial Development Training Centre was engaged by Morobe Mining to run the workshop.

Centre trainer Jennifer Wiau said the training was important for locals to prepare them for the mine to come out of the Wafi-Golpu project.

“The training has made them realise that handouts are not enough. They must be self-sustainable before mining starts so that their businesses can capitalise on the mine operation,” Wiau said.

Morobe Mining regional and economic development manager, Reuben Aila said people in the project area communities must build their skills capacity.

“Many of our villagers have a low education level. Therefore Morobe mining is prepared to bring in more literacy training into the community to help our people,” Aila said.
