A POLIO campaign and immunisation drive started early this month for all Morobe districts with a target to cover 80 per cent of the population this year, an official says.
Morobe public health director Micah Yawing said all health centres and other health medical facilities were alerted and were working to have children immunised.
“The programme started on Nov 2 and will end (today),” the health director said. “Assessments will be made and if needs arise to extend it, we will extend it for some more days,” Yawing said.
He said the success of the programme depended on parents bringing their children to be immunised.
“In the last few months, we have been concerned about Covid-19 and now that this threats subsides a bit, let us not forget about other curable diseases that have claimed lives along the way,” Yawing said.
He said despite Covid-19 now becoming less of a threat, keeping the protocols was of paramount importance.
“In keeping Covid-19 protocols, people not only minimise their chances of contracting it but all other diseases that have long been around,” Yawing said.
“Since Morobe has recorded only five cases so far and there are no further reported cases, people must still maintain protocols.
“When Covid-19 strikes, it affects other areas of our health in maternal, child and other aspects.
“At the provincial level, they were issues that needed to be addressed by all.”
Yawing urged all parents in Morobe to bring their children to be immunised.
