Immunisation programme starts in April
The National, Friday 02nd March 2012
A NATIONWIDE immunisation programme targeting polio, tetanus and measles will be held in April and May.
It will conducted by the health department and supported by the education department from April 2 to May 15 in the provinces.
The programme aims to reduce the high rate of measles, polio and tetanus affecting citizens in particular women and children.
A joint statement by Health secretary Pascoe Kase and Education Secretary Dr Musawe Sinabare said that all children under the age of three would be immunised with measles and oral polio vaccines.
They will also be provided with Vitamin A and a single doze of Albendazole while women of child-bearing age, including pregnant ones, will receive tetanus vaccination.
Schools are urged to educate and promote the immunisation exercise.
“We request to all education institutions and centers to inform students and parents about the exercise.
“They must ensure all children and women in their respective school areas are immunised,” a government statement said.
Female teachers should also be immunised, it added.
