Implement laws before passing them

IT is good to see the government passing a-mendments to the criminal codes relating to human trafficking.

The new penalties are 15 years for people smuggling and 20 years imprisonment involving children less than 18 years of age and life imprisonment if death occurs.

These laws are yet to be fully implemented while the racket that is people smuggling has grown from small to big.

People smuggling has established strong networks within all sectors responsible for handling such issues.

It is difficult to eradicate this problem now because the roots have gone deeper.

Concerned authorities have put in very little effort over the years to tackle this issue and today we have an influx of people from China, Bangladesh, India and other Asian countries.

We are now sitting on a timebomb.

This problem is cancerous with the potential to grow deeper and bigger beyond cure.

It is time for the Government to crack down on illegal activities and punish the perpetrators before they get out of hand.
