Implement sensor-based traffic lights

I WOULD like to raise a suggestion for our traffic lights in Port Moresby.

We have been using the time-based traffic lights system ever since traffic lights were implemented in Port Moresby.

As the capital city of PNG, the traffic in Port Moresby has been an issue for far too long.

The number of vehicles is increasing, leading to the rise in traffic congestion around roundabouts and especially traffic lights during peak hours.

For convenience, I think it is about time we upgrade and introduce the sensor-based traffic lights system in Port Moresby.

For those who do not know what this is, it is used at the downtown water front intersection.

It operates on a first-come, first go basis and calculates how long you wait for, being fair and convenient.

Traffic jams are becoming hazardous and a primary concern.

I believe the sensor-based traffic lights system will speed up traffic movement and minimise traffic congestion.

Our neighbouring country Australia has this sensor-based system in place and I have experienced and witnessed that it works conveniently well for them.

So I ask that our government to consider installing this system and also look into other efficient ways to minimise the traffic congestion in Port Moresby with less cost.
