Improve drains, authorities told

People living in Lae are calling on the provincial government and city authorities to improve the drainage system to avoid flash flooding during heavy rain.
Resident Willie Wayne said homes at Busulum were flooded when rain fell last Friday,” Wayne said.
“A bus and vehicles were floating with a house collapsing.
“Families living at the compound had to stay awake until morning worried about their safety.
“A proper drainage system must be constructed for the storm water to flow through.
“The Government and the city authority should look into the drainage system in the city.”
At Boinamo in Kamkumung, a house was covered by sand and others were damaged as the Bumbu River burst its banks.
Morris Lui and John Petrus said that around 9pm on Friday, they stayed awake all night as the flood damaged gardens and properties.
Butibum villagers said the area near the cemetery was damaged by floodwaters.
