A FATHER is in police custody after being accused of killing his son during an argument over homebrew last weekend.

Northern provincial police commander Snr  Insp Jacob Singura said the father was believed to have reacted in self-defence when the drunken son attacked him with a bush knife at Junita village, outside Popondetta town, Northern.

He is detained at the Popondetta police cell.

Singura said homebrew continued to be a major headache for police in the province despite their awareness campaigns against its production and consumption.

“We are doing our best with awareness, especially among youths,” Singura said.

“But they don’t take heed.”

In another incident, a senior police officer was arrested and charged with the assault on three women.

Snr Const Willie Tuarive, 53, from Aputuara village, in the Ijivitari district, was charged with common assault and sexually touching.

Singura said the incident allegedly happened when the three women were detained at the Sangara Estate police cell.

He was reported by another officer.

“I refused him bail because I am fed up with such behaviour by policemen,” Singura said.

He thanked the PNG-Australian policing partnership programme which donated a vehicle to the family sexual violence unit recently.
