POLICE recruitment is on hold as there are many in-house issues that needs to be solved, according to Police human resource management (HRM) director, Chief Insp Bob Kerry.
Kerry said police officers in the department’s training and recruitment division need to be trained before doing recruitment and training of recruits.
Kerry, who opened a week training at the Pacific Institute of Leadership and Governance (PILAG), said it was the first time police officers from that division would undergo such training and hoped to see some changes at the Bomana Training Institute. He said the public had been complaining about the type of police men and women produced at the police college so such training would help the recruiters when they go out recruiting.
“Police training is two years,” he said.
“Six months in the Bomana Police College and the other 18 months on probation in a police station.
“The probation officers are assessed by their provincial training officers (PTOs) and then they will sit for an exam and if they pass they will be confirmed as constables and if they fail they will have to re-sit.”
Kerry said young police officers who just passed out from the police college need supervision from their non-commissioned Officers who are their supervisors in the field.
He was happy with the PILAG staff for offering such training to police officers and hope it will have positive impact.
