Increase in car theft

Letters

CAR thefts in Port Moresby have increased at an alarming rate.
More cars are being stolen by criminal syndicates consisting of violent and notorious armed robbers.
They rob your car off you with violent means if that may be the cost, then they negotiate with you at a price for the return of the vehicle with an arranged “middle-man”.
The middle-man, whether it is a community leader, retired criminal or a police officer, has dealt with this on countless occasions and receives an encouraging share from the ransom.
Settlements in the city are the breeding ground of these criminals.
The settlement community does nothing about it because they are never the victim, the victims are people who live in proper suburbs and other settlements.
Settlements must go, there is no better solution.
Port Moresby experienced a decrease in vehicle theft and armed robbery from 2010 to 2016, but the numbers are up again.
The police are handicapped to deal with the rising number of crimes due to lack of funding and logistical problems.
They need help.
The office of the governor and the national government should address the issues to protect taxpayers who deserve a safe community.
