A SPECIAL police operation in East Sepik leading to the independence anniversary will begin at the end of this week.

Provincial police commander Chief Inspector Peter Philip said the operation was to ensure the people celebrated the nation’s 40th anniversary peacefully and safely.

“This is to ensure there is law and order during this big event,” Philip said.

“We will use whatever logistics we have here in Wewak and the other districts for the operation.”

Philip said there was a limited number of police vehicles and officers at rural stations, however what they had was enough to conduct operations across the province and to ensure peace and unity.

“We will use whatever resources we have to earn back the people’s trust and boost integrity in the force,” he said.

Police have started conducting awareness on law and order issues since Philip took office late last month.

The awareness would continue till the end of this year.

He said the operation, which will begin this Friday would continue till December.

Philip urged the people of East Sepik to respect the law.

“Police will work with community leaders, youth and everyone to achieve what police want to achieve,” he said.

“Our challenge now will be for those places where there are only two officers working.

“Mostly drunkards would cause a little problem, but I want to assure everyone that anyone caught breaking the law will be dealt with accordingly by the rule of law.”
