Independent report on quake to be tabled in Parliament
CHAIRMAN of the special parliamentary committee on emergencies Kobby Bomareo says an independent scientific report on the possible cause of the 7.5 magnitude earthquake on Feb 26 will be tabled in Parliament.
Bomareo, who is the Tewai-Siassi MP, told parliament that the disaster was one of the worst the country had experienced.
“Though we have a report from Australian Geoscience already on the possible cause of the 7.5 magnitude earthquake, we also need to have an independent team of experts to do an independent assessment on the possible cause,” he said.
“Our people are traumatised and still want to know what really caused the disaster.
“We will engage a team of experts to do an independent investigation and assessment on the possible cause of the disaster and it will be presented in this Parliament for our people to know.”
Bomareo also expressed his sympathy and condolences on behalf of the people of Tewai-Siassi to those affected by the disaster.
Meanwhile, North Fly MP James Donald expressed concern that Ok Tedi mine donated K50 million to the national government and nothing to the Western government.
He said 26,000 people affected by the quake in Western did not receive any relief assistance yet.
