Injustice to victim

Letters

I READ with great interests regarding acting Judge David Susame’s decision to suspend the sentence of the man found guilty of raping his cousin as appeared in The National yesterday (Dec 16) on page 13.
The victim is said to be jailed for five years after the court found him guilty of raping his cousin who was then 14 years old.
The more intriguing part is that the victim is under age.
And the judge says and I quote “to suspend the jail term if the man, who was 20 at the time of the offense in March 2017, pays a K1,000 compensation plus Tolai shell money to the value of K500 to the victim and her immediate family.”
So from now onwards, guys can go on raping underage girls and pay compensation of K1,000 plus customary items valued K500 to victim’s relatives and avoid going to jail.
Is this judge setting a precedence for similar cases in PNG?
This is an injustice to the victim as she will never forget this ordeal in her life time.

  • This should not happen as it is hurting for the victim and family members as the court has leniency and had let off offender. there should be a fair penalty imposed to the rapist. Another mystery for PNG population and law.
