Inquiry directs Duma to present statement

MINISTER for Commerce and Industry William Duma is expected to present a statement to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS) loan deal when he appears on July 13.
Duma, who was former Petroleum and Energy minister, briefly appeared before the inquiry yesterday.
He is one of the 20 who will continue to present evidence.
COI chairman Sir Salamo Injia directed Duma to submit documents which he will present along with a statement explaining the evidence.
Duma was a cabinet minister in 2014 during which the UBS loan was obtained.
Meanwhile, acting Clerk of Parliament Kala Aufa, who also appeared before the inquiry, was directed to do a search on the documents that had been submitted by the Registrar of the National and Supreme Courts.
Sir Salamo told the inquiry that the documents related to the leadership tribunal on former prime minister Peter O’Neill in 2014.
He said Aufa was required to do the search and advice the inquiry if there was any advice from the chief justice at that time.
Although most of the documents had been submitted, the commission directed Parliament to provide the information on the leadership tribunal appointed at that time.
Aufa was represented by his lawyer Robin Kawat, who told the commission that his client had submitted the documents and information as required.
Kawat told the commission that the documents that Aufa had submitted included ministerial statements and papers in parliament, questions without notice, debates, grievance debates, acts and laws passed by parliament in relation to the UBS loan.

  • If these witnesses were thought efficient and capable of understanding and signing off the original government documents why do they now need highly paid lawyers to answer for them
