 A PARLIAMENTARY committee on education will conduct an inquiry into the disbursement of teachers’ salaries and entitlements in the country.

The resolution of the committee was announced in parliament last Friday by chairman and Wabag MP Robert Ganim and committee member Julie Soso, the Eastern Highlands Governor.

“As you would recall on Monday Feb 10, it was revealed by The National newspaper that there will be an inquiry by the Education Parliamentary Committee into issues of teachers’ salaries and other entitlements,” Ganim said.

“The committee formally wants to inform this Parliament and our people that we are now set to conduct this inquiry.

“While there are so many issues affecting our teachers, the committee has focused this inquiry into one aspect – their welfare and wellbeing are important factors that will support our teachers to execute their prime responsibilities of teaching our children.”

The inquiry’s terms of references are:

  • Request for relevant government departments and officers to provide background information and explanations relating to salaries and other entitlements for teachers;
  • examine and observe the processes and procedures involved in the disbursement of their salaries and other entitlements;
  • ascertain the adequacy of the current processes and procedures involved in the disbursement of their salaries and other entitlements;
  • ecommend the establishment of reliable and transparent processes and procedures in the disbursement of their salaries and other entitlements; and,
  • Promote and foster accountability and transparency processes and procedures in the disbursement of salaries and other entitlements.
