A STRATEGIC corporate plan has been launched to enable a partnership between the Institute of Engineers and the government to fulfill Vision 2050.
Also launched last Friday was the PNG Engineering magazine which the institute published for the engineers to share their ideas and discuss engineering issues in.
The plan will run for 10 years and has 10 objectives which are aligned to the Vision 2050.
Treasury Minister Don Polye said the institute was the only institution for engineers in PNG that had been recognised in the region as the most effective engineering organisation.
He emphasised on maintenance, rehabilitation and construction of all infrastructures to be the single most important priority of the government.
He said new projects would not be implemented until existing infrastructures which had deteriorated over the years had been upgraded and maintained.
On that note, he said the institute would play an important role to improve infrastructure through its corporate plan.
The plan outlines what the institutions will do to empower engineers.
Chief executive officer of institute Bennedict Mick said engineers needed to keep themselves up to date with the latest development.
Mick said new and innovative ideas were always coming up and engineers needed to be kept up to date with them.
With that in mind, Mick said a competency-based assessment system would be introduced in the second half of this year to assist engineers assess their competency levels.
The plan also looks at the institutions partnership with the government to deliver Vision 2050. It highlights the desire and willingness to work with the government.
The institution plans to do this by creating a body that will be able to audit the technical infrastructure programme rolled out by the national government.
