Institution building new infrastructure to cater for increase in enrolments

A PRIVATE institution in Kainantu, Eastern Highlands, has built new infrastructure to accommodate more students for the new academic year.
Career Training Institute (CTI) director Billi Habiri said the institute, established in 2020, expected to enrol 14,800 students this year, the majority being for the flexible, open and distance education (Fode) programme offered.
Habiri said the institute enrolled 7,415 students last year, most of whom were Fode students, and a similar number in their first year, but aimed to take in more.
He said the institute accepted both school leavers and non-school leavers for courses in business studies, health sciences and aviation training.
Habiri said with the increasing number of non-school leavers and drop-outs annually from high school and secondary school, many of these youth had limited opportunities to continue their education and CTI aimed to give them a second chance.
New dormitories were constructed over the last quarter of last year for the institute’s full-time students.
Habiri said the male and female dormitories would be for students enrolled in the schools of health sciences, business and aviation.
Fode students would only visit the institute to consult with teachers, pick up material and assignments, submit work and sit for tests and exams.
Of the total number of enrolments expected this year only 800 will be for full-time students – health science, 400 students; business, 300; and, aviation, 100.
