Interests flow in for Frangipani 7s
EAST New Britain Rugby Football Union have confirmed Aug 27-28 for the Nivani Frangipani Sevens 2010, with a total of K21,000 up for grabs in all categories and the cup winners walking away with K10,000.
Tournament director Ian Leklek yesterday confirmed this from Kokopo.
Leklek said that teams from West New Britain, New Ireland, Madang, Morobe and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville had confirmed their interest since the Kimbe 7s late July, with the possible appearance again of the Barbarians – the national sevens development squad.
Of the provinces, current sevens champions Kimbe Rebels, Kimbe Urban, Gigo and Bialla from WNB are set to travel in, as well as the Drongos 1 and 2, Kara, and Mangai from NIP.
Kimbe 7s Plate winners, Madangs Madgauns have also notified the organisers of their interest, while Unitech Reds of Lae may make the trip to Rabaul this time.
Bougainville teams, O’Town, Pirates and Traders are the other visiting teams besides the local clubs from around ENB.
Leklek also confirmed that the Nivani Frangipani 7s would be a 16-team tournament, with all games to be played at the Kokopo Secondary School oval over two days.
