INVESTMENTS by the Government and supported by the private sector are beginning to pay off with PNG hosting major events, Minister assisting the Prime Minister in Bougainville Affairs and Sports William Samb says.
Samb, pictured, said the Government had invested more than K1 billion to host the Pacific Games.
“Just like our business houses, our government led by Prime Minister Peter O’Neill recognises the importance of sport and its role in the community,” he said.
Samb attended a breakfast with members of Carbine International Congress whose main focus was on sports development.
“It is wonderful to know that we have like-minded executives working here in PNG, many of whom have lived here for a long time and give so much of their time and funds to supporting sport,” he said
“This support ranges from junior development to international representation.”
PNG recently hosted the PGA Golf Open in Port Moresby where more than 70 international golfers contested a prize pool of A$150,000 (K367,418).
“We also saw more than 250 anglers fight out the 2018 national game fishing titles which also attracted significant sponsorship from the private sector,” he said.
