Involve districts in projects: MP

LAE MP John Rosso says district development authorities should take part in resource projects as well.
Rosso made the statement during the Wafi-Golpu project consultative meeting in Lae last Thursday.
Rosso agreed with Bulolo MP Sam Basil that district development authorities should participate in the project.
“I implore the mining minister to ensure district authorities are involved in the agreements because it’s very critical,” he said.
He requested Morobe Governor Ginson Saonu to keep the Morobe MPs informed of the progress of negotiations “to ensure we get the best possible result for our people, because at the end of the day, we report to our people”.
“The delays (in the negotiations) was not bad. Governor Ginson Saonu did the right by putting a stop to see how we will proceed. But now let’s put aside all difference,” he said. He agreed with Prime Minister James Marape who said everyone should get a fair share.
“Landowners should get what is fair for them. Our districts should get what is fair for them. Our provincial government should get what is fair for them.
“And not forgetting our investors, who should also get what is fair for them.
“When investors come to the country they create jobs, money and also pay taxes to the government which should not be overlooked as it is one of the important factors.”

  • That is true, the Governors must also consult their local MPs and the District Authorities and even the Rural Local Level Governments.

There are also local private sector operators within the project areas who must also be consulted.

The Women & Youth representation must also be considered.
