Is Mola trying to stifle progress?

Letters, Normal

I REFER to Prof Glen Mola’s article “PMC not a cost effective project” (The National, Nov 16).
Now I am beginning to see Mola’s reasons for opposing this project so vehemently.
First, I like his suggestion that that “alternate funding” be deposited and use the interest earned to send the sick abroad for complex medical procedures.
This is a good short-term suggestion.
But is it practical in the long-run?
I hope Mola is not suggesting that after he is dead, I will still keep sending my children abroad for medical attention.
Second, his use of the Royal Hobart Hospital in Tasmania as a case to illustrate his “cost effective” agenda is irrelevant in the current debate.
Royal Hobart is not the only hospitals in Australia offering specialised services.
There are so many hospitals for Australians to choose.
But in PNG, we do not have such luxury.
Is Mola intentionally trying to suppress progress?
Third, I fail to grasp his logic when he says “complex and sophisticated medical technology needs to be in place”.
Is he insinuating that these “technologies” are too complicated for our local doctors to use or that we do not possess the capacity to learn how to use them?
Fourth, I can’t help but marvel that the good professor even has the audacity to claim that PMC, if built and saves one heart patient per fortnight, that will somehow make PMC “dangerous” for us.
Finally, Mola’s main reason for opposing this project: “Spending more money to achieve not so good outcomes.”
It occurs to me that he is more concerned about our “money” than our lives.
The good professor seems to be so consumed by the K500 million that he disregards the 6.5 million people in this country and our future generations.
Mola is a good doctor who has helped so many female citizens in PNG.
But that does not automatically make him an “expert” on all health issues, much less to advocate against this life-saving project.
The PM, the NEC and all stakeholders must move decisively to have PMC built.
