THE Gulf Isapea are looking at recruiting Fijian players to bolster the squad for the new Digicel Cup season.

Isapea patron and Gulf Governor Havila Kavo revealed this during yesterday’s K500,000 sponsorship announcement by the Minerals Resource Development Company in Port Moresby.

This would make the Petroleum Resources Kutubu-sponsored Gulf side the first to bring in overseas players.

The Lae Snax Tigers have Fijian Petero Sanivalu, but he was already based in Port Moresby.

The Isapea are hoping to get the players from Fiji’s Ba province.

Kavo said the contracts of the four unnamed Fijians would be for one year only.

The players’ work permits and other requirements are being sorted as the franchise prepares for the premiership.

“Franchises can contract players outside the country. We chose Ba because the standard of league is closes to us,” Kavo said.

He said the recruitment Fijian’s was to add depth and experience to the side and to ensure there was competition for places.

Kavo said this would ensure the players performed week in week out when spots were on the line.
