Island airstrip to be upgraded

Lablab airstrip on remote Siassi Island in Morobe will undergo a major upgrade to allow the resumption of a passenger and freight service.
The 750-metre long airstrip, located at Lablab Station, has been closed for many years due to its poor state and lack of routine maintenance.
That forced the island’s inhabitants to rely solely on sea transportation.
Tewai-Siassi MP Dr Kobby Bomareo on Wednesday announced that he had allocated K500,000 for work on the airstrip to commence.
“I have changed the scope of work from the road to the airstrip,” he said.
“I am now telling the contractor to fix the airstrip to get it ready for
|people to use during the Lutheran Women’s Conference to be held in September.
“I will bring in the cones to put at the airstrip once work is completed.”
