A MAN is dead and another in critical condition at the Lorengau General Hospital in Manus after their fishing trip went wrong on Wednesday.
Acting provincial police commander Senior Inspector David Yapu said yesterday that four fishermen from Pak Island went on a fishing trip near Tong Island in the Rapatona LLG.
While they were fishing, they experienced bad weather, with heavy rain and rough seas, so they went to a small island near Tong to seek shelter.
While there, they got attacked by eight people with bush knives. Yapu said the suspects slashed Tanou Amos, 48, from Pak island, on the left hand.
“His left hand was hanging off his arm, after he was slashed with a bush knife and he died due to loss of blood,” Yapu said.
Another victim was also slashed on his left arm and is now admitted at the Lorengau hospital.
Yapu said after the attack, the suspects fled while the fishermen got into their boat and transported the injured man and the body of Amos to Lorengau town. He said the situation is tense but closely monitored by police.
A police team has been dispatched to Tong to round up the identified suspects.
