WUVULU Island will be hosting its second Wuvulu Island Christmas Basketball Challenge in December.
Thirty-five teams will converge on the tiny atoll of Manus (Wuvulu) and enjoy a feast of basketball action.
The six centres that have shown interest in taking part are Lae, Madang, Goroka, Manus, Wewak, Vanimo, Wuvulu and Aua.
A working committee has been setup to plan and ensure that the event comes to fruition.
The committee spearheaded by chairman/coordinator, former Papua New Guinea international player Joe Moka is taking the leading role.
Moka said they estimated the tournament budget to be K50,000 they needed additional funds to build facilities of proper standard.
“We are organising a proposal to be presented to Minister for Sports and 2015 Pacific Games Justin Tkatchenko for more funds to build the facilities,” he said.
He said appeal letters had been written to business houses, especially Coca-Cola Amatil, which had helped them in 2011 by donating 12 basketballs.
“We want Telikom PNG to assist us with prizes because we have 2 VSAT installed on the island,” he said. Moka thanked Papindo, which helped with K200 worth of foodstuffs.
He said those willing to help in cash or kind can deposit money in BSP Account # 1011892500 (Wuvulu Island Christmas basketball challenge) or contact Joe Moka 7127 3688 or Sam Kewa 7114 7494.
