Islanders: Cooperation will strengthen us
The National,Monday 02nd April 2012
TWO participants at the Pacific human resource managers conference believe that co-operation will strengthen the economies of island nations.
Marshall Islands’ ministry of health human resource manager Ricky Pomingo and Palau’s public service system director Goretti Masayos said they had learnt a lot from the experience shared by PNG’s department of personnel management.
Pacific island nations share similar experience, cultural and development challenges and aspirations.
Masayos said the conference had taught them many things they would take back home to improve public sector performance.
The conference was attended by 26 participants from the Pacific nations.
Pomingo said the island nations had small economies to meet the international market.
But he said through regional co-operation, the island nations could help build other economies.
He said the education curriculum in the region should also provide studies on various Pacific island nations.
“We know about PNG, because we learn through out education curriculum. But do PNG know about us?
“We should also target regional studies so that young people as future leaders can understand the challenges faced in different Pacific island nations to make good decision based on mutual understanding,” Pomingo said.
Department of Personal Management deputy secretary Ravu Verenagi said the conference is one way of strengthening regional cooperation through collective learning and sharing of information.
