Islands have potential: Lapun

THERE is a huge potential for the growth of hockey in the islands region and around the country.
These are the words of hockey sport competition manager Raymond Lapun after conducting the competition in the PNG Games.
“We have some potential in hockey in both East and West New Britain,” Lapun said after hosts West New Britain forced a goal-less draw against top centre NCD in both the men’s and women’s games.
Though they did not make the finals, Lapun spoke highly of their win over NCD as the highlight of the competition.
“We can see a lot of potential from all parts of the country as well and encourage these provinces to continue to play hockey.
“I also want to encourage other provinces who have not participated in this year’s Game and should make it happen in the next games,” he said.
Lapun said Morobe won the gold medal in women’s competition beating NCD 1-0 and hosts WNB, won their first hockey medal at a PNG Games, picking up bronze after holding off Team Central for 1-0 win.
In the men’s competition, Team Central went through undefeated and beat Morobe 3-2 in the final while pre-tournament NCD edged out Manus 1-0 in the bronze medal playoff.
