Police Minister Jelta Wong has asked Kairuku-Hiri MP Peter Isoaimo to provide a report about police harassing betel nuts sellers from Central and taking bribes from them.
He told Isoaimo that he would use the report to deal with the police officers concerned.
Isoaimo told Parliament that police officers were setting up roadblocks along the Hiritano Highway and demanding bribes from
sellers from the Mekeo area travelling to Port Moresby with their betel nuts.
“Since last month there has been a partial ban on the selling of betel nuts in Port Moresby which is only banning selling in front of shops and public places in preparation for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation. Now we have all the police officers setting roadblocks along the highway. They are stopping small people from bringing betel nuts to Port Moresby,” he said.
