STUDENTS at a Port Moresby school who are used to sitting on the floor during classes have been given 10 desks and 20 chairs by a company.

Internatioanl Training Institute donated the desks and chairs to the St Francis Primary School at Koki in Port Moresby yesterday.

Managing director Kumaran Sentheyval said: “ITI has been helping tertiary institutions, sporting groups and other organisations as our social obligation to community development.

“This is the first time for us to come down to the primary school level and we are very happy to assist them.”

Head teacher Anastasia Gabriel said some students who had been sitting on floors were glad to receive the new desks and chairs.

She said they had 500-plus students and 23 teachers.

“The school has been operating for more than 60 years without any form of assistance apart from government subsidies,” Gabriel said.

“ITI responded to our request and helped with these items. On behalf of the school, I say thank you to Sentheyval.”

Deputy head teacher Philip Thomas said: “Despite unfavourable circumstances over the years, we were persistent in ways to obtain assistance and we are very fortunate to have some of them.

“One classroom block was fully renovated by BSP. Our library was stocked with 3,000 books by Hope World Wide through the internet.

“A new six-in-one building will be constructed in the school as soon as draft plans are finalised, with joint funding from Moresby South MP Justin Tkatckenko and NCD Governor Powes Parkop.”
