ONE does not have to acquire formal education to be equipped with knowledge and skills, Komane John Maimboi says.
The 31-year-old jack-of-all-trades is a self-taught tradesman in welding, fabricating, plumbing, building maintenance, stonewall and brick laying, fencing and painting.
The father-of-four is from Gumine in Chimbu and lives at Saraga settlement at 6-Mile, Port Moresby.
“I haven’t been to school. I acquired all my skills by observing and working alongside my father Wisi Maimboi, who is a certified tradesman,” Maimboi said.
Maimboi put those skills to good use six years ago when he started making garden tools and selling them around the Boroko area to make a living.
He then saw a demand for cooking and barbecue equipment so he ventured into that.
“I ventured into this business to support my family,” Maimboi said.
“I started with picks, spades and shovels, forks, scrapers then later cooking stands, barbecue plates with stands and grills with lids.
“Prices range from K15 to K550 depending on the size.”
