Jackson to grace sports awards
Champion Australian women’s basketballer Lauren Jackson will by the special guest speaker at next month’s SP Awards in Port Moresby.
Growning up in Albury, New South Wales, Jackson is considered by many her country’s greatest female basketballer.
Jackson played at the elite level for over 15 years, which included an extensive list of accolades spanning across several leagues not limited to Australian (WNBL), American (WNBA), European (Euro League) and Asian (WKBL) Women’s Basketball.
Her notable achievements include being the first Australian to be selected as the first overall pick in an international and professional draft and being crowned an All-Star in her first WNBA season.
In 2003, Jackson was named MVP in the WNBA, making her the youngest player to receive the award and the first non-American, challenging the American dominance of basketball.
In 2012, she received the honour of being named flag-bearer for Australia at the London Olympics, where she was instrumental in the Australian Opals bronze medal win. This year Jackson announced her retirement from basketball, leaving an incredible mark on the sport — not only in Australia but internationally.
Since retiring Jackson the 35-year-old has had little down time between completing her degree in gender and diversity and charity work.
She is a highly sought-after guest at events.
Her insights into basketball, being an elite athlete and performing at the highest level along with her personal experiences make for a compelling and unique Q&A.
