A MAN in West New Britain will spend 15-and-a-half-years in jail for his part in the gang rape of a woman in the province.

Emil Gauta was sentenced to 18 years in jail by the Kimbe National Court early this month but had two-and-a half years deducted.

Gauta, 32 and married with four children, committed the offence on Nov 15, 2009 when he and a group of youths threatened the victim with knives and took turns to rape here.

Sentencing him, Justice Panuel Mogish said Gauta gave little thought to the rights of the victim.

He said neither did he consider the interests nor the consequence that would follow in the event that he was convicted for rape,

He added that all that mattered to Gauta was his friends and sex and whether the victim consented was immaterial.
