JAPAN’s ambassador to Papua New Guinea yesterday signed a grant contract worth over K1 million with four recipients in Port Moresby.
Three primary schools and the PNG Fire Service are the recipients of the grant assistance worth K1,014,124.
“The Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) aims to directly impact the lives of people in the communities,” ambassador Satoshi Nakajima said. “The GGP will address basic human needs like primary education, healthcare and basic infrastructure, including disaster prevention and water supply among others.”
The assistance under Japan’s development assistance programme in PNG will see the fire service supplied with six fire trucks ahead of the Apec Summit.
The three schools to benefit from the Japanese grants are Semedagoda Primary School in Central, and Port Moresby’s St Paul’s Primary School and St Peter Chanel Primary School.
At Semedagoda Primary School, the grant will help in the installation of a water supply system to improve water accessibility and encourage good sanitation practices in the school.
Nakajima said clean and safe drinking water was a basic human need but most communities in PNG had difficulty accessing it.
The GGP is contributing towards empowering the people through improved education and life skills and enhancing the level of service delivery and basic infrastructure targeted by PNG’s Government Vision 2050, he said.
The number of grassroots projects assisted by the grant over the years stands at 291, including the above four projects.
