A GROUP from the Japanese International Corporation Agency (Jica) was in Lae yesterday to conduct a feasibility study for a waste management project in the city.
Lae Urban LLG health manager Godfrey Worio confirmed that the team had visited several dump sites to do a preliminary survey to see if the proposed project could be undertaken.
“They are planning to use the city’s dump site to set up a plant for waste management. Solid wastes that are dumped can be converted to by-products for agriculture and health purposes,” he said.
He highlighted that the Jica team would submit a report on their findings to their head office before funds could be made available for this project.
“It is an excellent concept that would help us manage our wastes as it is ecological. Currently we are dumping our wastes and burning,” he said.
