JAPANESE Ambassador to PNG Hiroharu Hashi Iwasaki opened a double classroom at a remote primary school outside Goroka town, Eastern Highlands, last Friday.
The little known Gulunoka Community School, at the northern end of Goroka town, was the lucky recipient of a new double classroom courtesy of the Japanese government under its grant assistance for grassroots human security projects.
The school gave Hashi Iwasaki a hero’s welcome.
Hashi Iwasaki said the Japanese government had been helping remote communities of Papua New Guinea over the many years and would continue to help wherever possible.
He thanked the schoolchildren, teachers, parents and the local community for the warm welcome and reception.
He handed over the keys for the double classrooms to Gulunoka Community School witnessed by parents and citizens.
The classrooms were constructed at the cost of US$53,769 (K114,402) under the grant facility to help develop rural infrastructure for education.
It was aimed at increasing the capacity of the school to enrol more students with the new classrooms and to promote the vision of the Papua New Guinea government to boost its human resource development and human empowerment.
“The project will further enhance the diplomatic ties between the Governments of Papua New Guinea and Japan,” Hashi Iwasaki said.
