MORE than 60 participants attended a week-long information sharing training to improve their teaching in mathematics and science for secondary schools.
According to Japan International Corporation Agency Papua New Guinea (Jica) chief representative Masato Koinuma, many students face issues in understanding these subjects and the training was designed to train teachers to improve teaching the two subjects – math and science.
“The challenge is on the Education Department to prioritise in-service and training on the use of text books and the teacher’s manuals supplied by Jica and continue training for teachers on how to effectively deliver lessons,” he said.
Koinuma said the workshop under the Best PNG programme would allow teachers to be familiar with the content before teaching students.
Higher Education acting secretary Dr Francis Hualupmomi said one of Government’s aim was to introduce a standard-based curriculum in teacher education and also in nursing and the technical and vocational education.
He commended the collaboration between the Education Department and other stakeholders and Jica for addressing the challenge of improving teaching of math and science in schools.
Jica is advancing its activities around the pillars of a field-oriented approach, human security, and enhanced effectiveness, efficiency, and speed.
It was intended to improve people lives in developing countries around the world.
