PEOPLE are starting to realise the importance of basic services and what they will do before the government can play its part in helping them.
One of the important things several community leaders have started is getting their people organised to start on projects to convince their MPs to support them.
The Kuli Kinjimbi clan in Anglimp, Jiwaka, is one of the many communities who have taken it up on themselves to build a new 2km road.
Samuel Timi, a leader of the Kinjimbi clan, said he was proud that his community had accomplished their objective of building the road.
He said coffee trees, food gardens and land reserved for other purposes were handed over to be cleared so the road could be built.
Timi told The National that they had several projects but people found it difficult when they did not have a road.
He said they planned to have a fish farm, a piggery and several chicken projects, including other agricultural ventures.
“This was our dream and we have achieved it and now we are looking forward to other services like electricity to light up our community,” he said.
“We have played our part and now we are asking the government to do something for us.”
He added that they had asked their local MP Komun Joe Koim and Governor Dr William Tongamp to assist them with gravel for the road.
Timi reiterated that people had to find means and ways to help themselves and should stop waiting for “free handouts”.
“If we are waiting for someone to do something for us, then we will miss out on having the new road.
“How can our MPs and the government help us if we just sit around doing nothing?” he asked.
