Jiwaka unveils new flag
The National, Wednesday September 18th, 2013
THE people of Jiwaka witnessed, for the first time, the raising of their provincial flag alongside the national flag during the Independence Day celebration on Monday at Minj.
The launching and raising of the new provincial flag attracted thousands of people at the oval next to the Anglimp-South Waghi district office.
The Independence celebration in Jiwaka revealed to the people the meaning of becoming self-governed.
A police parade added colour to the event.
The launching and raising of the flags coincided with a welcome ceremony of the new provincial police commander Supt Joseph Tondop.
Governor William Tongamp told the gathering at Minj that they all have to work together to develop the province.
Tongamp said this was a first for Jiwaka to combine three events on the same day, flag launching and raising and the welcoming of PPC Tondop to the province.
He said independence means to self-govern and witnessing their flag raised was a big achievement.
“We will start from here and once we leave this place, we will become changed persons,” Tongamp said.
Tongamp said the most serious problem faced nowadays was not politicians but how people think and behave. He said a changed behaviour would bring good and those who would help the public to change were public servants.
