Jomik Group taking fire safety seriously

Business

Jomik Group of Companies in Bougainville recently engaged two officers from the National Fire Service to undertake a fire-risk assessment of all their commercial and residential properties in Buka.
The properties included the supermarket and all wholesale and retail outlets in Buka and Kokopau.
Fire officers Ludwig Oala, from Buka, and Ketom Rasom, from Manus, did audits on all Jomik commercial and residential properties.
They recommended to Jomik management what type of firefighting equipment they should acquire for their properties.
The officers conducted fire-safety training sessions with the company staff.
Staff attended the training sessions in groups of between 10 and 15 people.
The company made it compulsory for all staff to attend.
Presentations included information on different types of fires, different types of fire extinguishers to fight different fires, how to operate different fire extinguishers and how to respond in case of a fire.
Oala and Rasom also demonstrated different firefighting techniques, using different fire extinguishers and the fire blanket.
Staff were also invited to try the different types of fire extinguishers to fight different fires.
The company lost its warehouse to a fire last November.
