A JOURNALISM student at Divine Word University is spending two weeks in New Zealand to learn about “how to boost economic growth through the use of the media”.
Pauline Mago King, a final-year Bachelor of Communication Arts (Journalism) student from East New Britain, is keen to learn how to produce newsworthy packages for radio and television, although her strength lies in writing.
“I want to be employed in television and radio to reach the masses that can’t read or buy newspapers,” she said.
“Even for those who can read, television and radio allows people to visualise and hear the underlying messages presented in the form of news packages.” King hopes that the skills she will learn will allow her to shed more light on business and trade in Papua New Guinea to empower disadvantaged groups in the community.
Head of the university’s department of communication arts Rohan Vincent said King was selected from three students shortlisted.
King is one of three Pacific Islands students – one from Samoa and one from Fiji – on a fully-funded trip.
“The Pacific Cooperation Foundation, a New Zealand-based foundation, initiated this through its media programme to improve the level and quality of media exposure in the Pacific on business and trade issues in the region,” Vincent said.
