Journalist helps mum deliver baby

WOMEN need to know the basics of delivering babies in case they come across situations in which their help is required, says Constable Freda Peter.
Peter, a member of the constabulary’s Family Protection Unit, was commenting on how a female journalist helped a young woman deliver her baby at home in Madang last Wednesday.
The National reporter in Madang Dorothy Mark helped a neighbour deliver her 3.2 kg baby.
Peter said Women’s Day celebrations in the country should focus on educating women to deliver babies, their personal hygiene and how to run small businesses.
Peter said Mark didn’t use any gloves because there was no time to find one. And it was lucky that she had arrived in time to save the baby.
She said Mark delivered the baby safely and with umbilical cord still attached, she drove first-time mother Beverlyn Peter, 21, to hospital where a midwife attended to her.
“Mark could have cut the umbilical cord at home if she knew how to do so. But she didn’t know and was scared she might make a mistake,” Peter said.
“It was safer to drive the young mother to the hospital.
“All women must have a fair idea of what to do because they are dealing with lives.”
