ENGA’s provincial police commander is urging reporters to check their stories and get their facts right before publishing them.
Supt Martin Lakari was commenting on a newspaper story on Monday headlined “30 died in Laiagam fight”.
Lakari said nine people had been killed in the two separate tribal fights at Pilakambi and near Laiagam station.
He said two people were killed in Pilakambi when a fight broke out in May after a rape while seven people were killed in Laiagam in April after two cousins fought over a piece of land in Laiagam station.
He said the police and the Provincial Peace and Good Order Committee managed to stop the fights and issued the warring tribes with preventive orders.
Lakari said there had been no more tribal fights since last month.
He said he did not  know where the 21 deaths reported in the newspaper had occurred.
He said police continued to camp in Pilakambi and Laiagam station to maintain order and peace.
Lakari said if there was any killing he would have been briefed by his officers.
He urged reporters to check stories given by anonymous sources with police or the authority concerned.
Lakari said misleading stories did not do any good and painted a negative picture of the people and district.
He said such stories did not help the work of the police and other law enforcement agencies in the province.
