Judge summons officers

A JUDGE has summoned three State officials to re-appear before him on issues relating to an inquiry on an alleged police brutality case.
Justice David Cannings summoned Police Commissioner Tom Kulunga, National Capital District metropolitan commander Supt Andy Bawa and Public Solicitor Frazier Pitpit to appear in court on April 30.
The three officers appeared in court last Wednesday and gave sworn evidence.
Cannings was not satisfied with their responses on Wednesday on the human rights violations allegations.
Each of them is required to file an affidavit stating in detail, corroborated by supporting documents, their responses to the court’s requisitions.
Justice Cannings said Kulunga’s evidence was vague and did not demonstrate any detailed knowledge.
He said Bawa’s evidence was less unconvincing but he was unable to explain why 10 months after this very serious incident, only two officers had been charged under the Criminal Code.
“There continues to be tough talk about clamping down on police brutality. But where is the evidence of the charges and the claim that two members of the (police) force have been committed for trial?” Cannings said.
The court published a judgment last month in the form of a report on the inquiry into the alleged brutal treatment of 74 men by a group of police officers on May 26 last year at 7-Mile, in the National Capital District.
