THE Dept of Justice and Attorney-General will build a new rehabilitation centre in Jiwaka for ex-prisoners to be trained in programmes like agriculture and business.
The centre will be built at Avi in the Anglimp-South Waghi and will be managed by the ex-inmates aftercare association.
Dept of Justice and Attorney-General crime prevention and restorative justice executive director Zachary Sitban, who officiated at the launch of the community policing programme on Friday, was accompanied by the department staff.
Sitban said the rehabilitation centre would be a valuable resource for the ex-inmates.
He said the aim of the centre was to make sure the community abides by the laws of the country.
“This centre will provide a better place for those who leave prison to start a new life,” he said.
“I also thank the executives of the ex-inmates aftercare association for their kind efforts and time to create a life for those who are seen as bad people by the law.”
Sitban said once the centre was completed trainings would be conducted.
He said the department wanted to make sure peace, law and order was maintained starting at the family level.
Sibtan presented a K20,000 from the department to help the association in its operation.
Founding chairman of the ex-inmates aftercare association Pastor Moses Kerua thanked the department for its commitment to building the centre.
Kerua said the idea was for people who had served time in prisons to be given a second chance and become better members of society.
“The aim of this association was to give to them (ex-inmates) a second life, a better and a successful life and so they can live a God-fearing life,” he said.
Kerua said everyone had a purpose including former prisoners and the centre would help them realise that.
