SEVENTY-SIX pigs, two cows, two goats and K100,000 were given as compensation to the relatives of a woman who was allegedly shot and killed by her police officer husband in Jiwaka on May 3, according to police.
Jiwaka police commander Supt Gideon Kauke told The National that the compensation was made by the relatives of the policeman and the relatives of the woman accepted them and agreed that she would be buried at her husband’s village of Minz in Jiwaka.
Supt Kauke said the policeman was charged with murder last month and remanded at Barawagi jail awaiting his court date.
He warned policemen and other officers not to use guns as toys.
“We all are trained police officers and we must know the rules of engagement, when to discharge the firearm and when not to,” he said.
We know that when danger is imminent and our lives are at risk, we use the firearm to defend ourselves.”
Supt Kauke said the accused would defend himself.
He said the death of the woman had put a lot of pressure on the policeman and his family.
It was alleged that the policeman had an argument with his wife on May 3 and he used the gun.

  • Compensation is a deadly virus in this country. Who will benefit from this compensation payment? they lazy relatives. They will fight and squabble over who should get what and how much. This will bring more anger and the virus continues. Bloody lazy people. Outlaw compensation immediately. Put and end to this VIRUS

  • THE POLICEMAN HAS MURDERED HIS WIFE. IT IS A COLD BLOOD MURDER OUT OF RAGE. HIS CHARGE SHOULD BE DEATH PENALTY. DO AWAY WITH COMPENSATION A LIFE HAS BEEN LOST.

  • Death Penalty should be introduced in PNG. Any person who takes someones life be dealt with through death penalty and do away with compensation. The so call compensation is eating this society. Innocent people who are not party to the killing are wasting their resources through contribution.
Just do away with compensation and introduce death penalty. “u kisim laip blo nadla man, laip blo u bai gavman kisim tru death penalty”

  • If she’s got children will they receive what really belongs to them not the relatives

  • COMPENSATION MUST NOT FACTOR IN THE COURTS VERDICT….PREMEDIDATED FIRST DEGREE MURDER ….DESERVES MANY MANY YEARS IN STATE CUSTODY…

  • Do away with Compensation for cold blooded murder. Life is invaluable and murders should be denied of freedom for life or face death penalty. No one has authority to take other persons life.

  • A law and order personal did this to his wife and now we are looking at compensation to settle this issue.
What if some one on the street did the same to a man or woman on the street. The poor guy would be belt up by police officers and thrown into jail and may life sentence in jail for what he has done.
    WHAT ABOUT THIS POLICE OFFICER?

  • Let the law speak for itself in court. The Police officer will get what he deserves. But for the compensation, we all know that he can’t bring back his wife to life to say sorry to here. She is gone. Compensation is the only way to prove to his wife’s family that he is sorry and also it prevents retaliation from them.
That is a typical Papua New Guinea way of showing how regretful he is to have done that.

I don’t know if I am saying the right thing but its just my opinion.

  • if this meri has children this money should go to the direct caregivers who will be left to raise them pay for the well being and there education it should NOT be divided amongst all the lazy blood relatives whatsoever compensation is a vile diease which only breeds more disease and so on….

  • Do away with compensation. A priceless life has been lost from a hand of a crual man and we are saying the life of the poor woman is worth the compensation. Thats pure evil. The Police Department should do some justice for the loveless policeman

  • All guns should be locked away in amoury and only special force use them situation aries

  • Very poor conduct putting a price tag on a life, lost to a trigger hungry cop, hope he gets the death penalty, compensation em sumtin blo ples, just to keep her relatives from retaliating, but what justice will be served for this defenseless woman who lost her life, tragic lose for her children who will be motherless & now fatherless due to undisciplined actions taken by a disciplined officer, the irony in this predicament, SAY NO TO POLICE BRUTALITY!

  • The items listed for the so-called compensation do not come from the accumulated wealth of the murderer and criminal policeman. Relatives are forced to dig deeper out of customary obligation and contribute painfully for a crime they did not perpetrate. Do away with compensation, let common sense prevail.

  • I think this compensation is outlaw in the constitutions and why it is still existing. How this money is raised believe this policeman relatives is all business man/women in the country. Otherwise its another form of corruption and stealing of public fund for this compensation. Simply the law has to caught up with this stupid policeman and sentences him for life jail. The law of the country has to be exercise and not compensation. That k100,000 kina is lot of money something else.

  • So kill a person, then say sorry and compensate the relatives with some cash, pigs, dogs, cows and beer and all is fine and well again. Compensation culture does not serve justice in anyway. A belkol money can be given to grieving relatives, but those who have broken the law must still face the full force of the law.

  • And the cycle of violence continues thanks to the compensation ideology..so stupid and inhuman

  • The way I see it is he’s down 100K and probably gonna spend a few years in prison. This article is not saying that since he paid compo he’s free to go. He is still charged with murder and will go to prison regardless on what charges. Compo is the melenesian way, however In no way does it negate criminal liability on the policeman.
