K12m for teacher trainee funds

 THE European Union (EU) has committed K12 million for a primary school teacher trainee scholarship programme.

The scholarship programme is targeted at trainees from rural communities.

According to a joint statement by the EU and Department of National Planning and Monitoring, 250 students have benefited from the programme. 

“This funding will enable the training of up to 650 primary school teachers out of the estimated 6, 000 additional qualified primary school teachers required as a result of the introduction of the tuition free basic education,” the statement said.
