K16m road works end
The National, Thursday March 27th, 2014
THE new-look Bumbu Road, in Lae, will be officially opened tomorrow.
Simeon Suagu, the Works Department Lae roads project engineer, is happy the project has finally come to an end.
This will ease congestion and improve the flow of traffic in the city, Suagu said.
Suagu said he had inspected the Bumbu Road upgrade and was satisfied because the work was of high quality.
“The road cost around K16 million to complete,” he said.
Work on the 1.3 kilometre road started in 2011 but was only completed this week because of issues affecting the project.
The cemented section of the road stretches from Bumbu Bridge, near Kamkumung, to Kwila Street Junction, near the Highlands-Madang bus stop.
According to road construction company FTM, the delay was caused by court cases, bad weather and the change in project managers.
FTM site engineer Peter Garalom said it was not until November last year that concrete slabs were used on the road.
This followed the directive by Prime Minister Peter O’Neill to seal all roads in Lae.
