K20,000 up for grabs in 9s meet

A TOTAL prize money of K20,000 is up for grabs when they Southern Regional rugby league 9s tournament kicks off next month.
The six-day tournament is expected to start on Dec 6.
The event is a major drawcard for teams from the Southern region, who will converge on the Port Moresby Lloyd Robson oval to compete for several days.
Tournament director Ivan Ravu told The National in an interview yesterday that those teams intending to compete should pay a club registration fee of K700,000 while the team entry fee is K700.
The amount will cover the registration of players and the prize money totaling K20,000.
Ravu said he expected similar number of teams or more to participate in this year’s event compared to 66 sides last year.
Ravu said it was this part of the year when most of the rugby associations throughout the country wind up for the festive season.
However, he added that the tournament was to keep keen rugby league followers and youths out of lawlessness and trouble.   
The deadline for team lists is set for 4pm on Nov 27 and clubs have been warned that late entries will not be entertained.
Team entry forms can be collected from the Port Moresby League office.
The tournament is confirmed to teams and players from the Southern region which covers National Capital District, Central, Milne Bay, Oro, Gulf and Western provinces.
